The delicate strands of narrative guiding the experience of A.I. Somnium Files could not be more in tune with itself, which is why the trappings of typical anime tropes feel so uneasy. The characters are complex and likable; their world, enticing. The violence is tasteful and sensitive. However, I am consistently, but not constantly, sideswiped by some sexist or asinine anime humor. Like so many anime or anime-inspired things I like, it is so good that you end up having to brush aside the tiresome tropes. A thrilling story, or web of stories, constantly frustrated by its own genre baggage.
