198X (Steam), 100 Word Review

198X is an applause to itself. The synths, the Walkman, and the pixelated neon streets are so pandering and unrelatable. The interstitial montages of washed-out suburban daylight are far more novel and appealing, they at least don't feel like Stranger Things branding. The game experience veers between nonsense and tedium. Why does prescriptively playing a dungeon crawler "hack" the game world? Moreover, why in the midst of these arcade cabinet motifs is there a Phantasy Star clone? The voice actor performs the hackneyed personal narration well, but I'm still rolling my eyes at the Breakfast Club-ness of it all.
